Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox 2: the competition’s most recent version always takes the lead

The latest version of Firefox is still in the lead over Internet Explorer 7. Thus, two thirds of the 30 European countries studied use Firefox 2 more than Internet Explorer 7.
Perimeter:
  • Study conducted from 24/07/2006 to 12/03/2006
  • Perimeter of 86,169 web sites
Firefox 2 used more than Internet Explorer 7 in two thirds of European countries

Over the week from 27 November to 3 December 2006, the share of Firefox 2 visits (of all visits, all browsers combined) was higher than that of Internet Explorer 7 in two thirds of the 30 European countries studied, as set out below:

Between 27 November and 3 December 2006, Internet Explorer 7 was used the most in the United Kingdom, as compared to visits conducted with another browser in the same country: 14.3% of the visits. Followed by Switzerland, Ireland, France and Sweden:

What are the leading countries for Firefox 2?
Firefox 2 is used the most in Finland: 15.8% of visits generated in the country, all browsers combined. Germany ranks second, with 15%, followed by Slovenia, Croatia and Poland.

Let’s turn more specifically to France and Spain and the evolution we studied previously...

After a more noticeable launch, the recent version of Firefox has been outclassed by Internet Explorer 7 in French visits

As we noted during our study that ended on 29 October 2006, Firefox experienced a real boost during the week of its official launch, from 23 to 29 October 2006: 3.7% of Internet visits generated in France against only 1.7% for IE7 (which had not experienced this type of phenomenon when launched on 19 October 2006).

Firefox 2 continued to progress until the week of 13 to 19 November 2006 and achieved 7.2% of visits, while Internet Explorer 7 achieved 3.3%, i.e. two times less.

Week 47 (from 20 to 26 November 2006): the share of visits conducted via Internet Explorer 7 equaled that of Firefox 2, and finally resulted in an advance between 27 November and 3 December 2006: 11.4% for IE7 and 8.2% for FF2 (the automatic update effect?)

The leading browser therefore also ranked at the head of the classification of most recent versions, even if the gap with Firefox is not as significant as that of all versions combined …

For the week from 27 November to 3 December 2006, 21.5% of the Internet visits conducted with Internet Explorer or Firefox (all versions combined) are to be attributed to the competing browser. However, on the basis of visits with their new respective versions alone, Firefox still achieves 42%:

In terms of the interest of the visits, Firefox still achieved a higher rate of entering visits than Internet Explorer 7 for the week of 27 November to 3 December 2006: 43.2% of French visits via FF2 involved more than one page, versus 39.7% for IE7. This is confirmed for all versions combined of both browsers. The number of pages viewed per visit and the average length of the visits are higher in the case of Internet Explorer, however. These behavioral differences are, among other things, related to the users of the two browsers who do not necessarily visit the same types of sites and are more or less aware of navigation subtleties...

In Spain, Firefox 2 is still ahead

Like France, in Spain, Firefox 2 truly made an impact the week it was launched (43), with a share of visits generated in the country of 1.9%, and therefore outclassed Internet Explorer 7 (1.5%), which had greater presence up until that time.

Since then, Firefox 2 is still responsible for a larger number of visits, although Internet Explorer 7 significantly progressed between Weeks 47 and 48: its share of visits increased from 2.5% to 4.4%. For its part, Firefox 2 achieved 5.1% in Week 48: the gap is closing …

All versions combined, Firefox was responsible for 14.1% of Spanish visits for both browsers in the week from 27 November to 3 December 2006, a result that is lower than that of France, where it achieved 21.5%. However, based solely on the visits of their new respective versions, Firefox 2 still counts for more than half of the visits from Spain (54%) versus 42% for those from France:

Firefox 2, with a very noticeable launch, significantly outclassed Internet Explorer 2, however the leading browser, as one can imagine, is rapidly progressing … and faces a challenger who is not letting go, however …
